Introducing MOT1: Juliana Crossett

Why I Chose Occupational Therapy
I first discovered the world of occupational therapy when my Grandmother was admitted into an inpatient nursing home. I was twelve years old and looked at the health providers treating her as superheroes. These wonderful individuals were providing my Grandmother, a person they did not know, with incredible care. I realized then that I wished to be a part of this special service; I wanted to do something that would benefit the lives of others. Following these visits to the nursing home, I started researching different health professions. I studied facts about nurses, doctors, speech pathologists, and of course occupational therapists. When I read more into occupational therapy I realized that this was what I was meant to do. I love that through occupational therapy you improve a client’s mind, body, and spirit. Occupational Therapy is a personal form of health care that requires you to make connections with your patients, alongside improving their daily living activities. This made me know that my fit was right with occupational therapy as I love meeting new people and making new connections, something I thoroughly enjoyed throughout my college years. Currently, I ams so thankful for the ability to be studying at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis as I work towards my Master's of Occupational Therapy. By 2021, I will be able to call myself a licensed Occupational therapist; a job I have known I wanted to do for most of my life.
What a wonderful tribute to your grandmother! I'm so glad you found your way to OT and to UTHSC!
