Biomechanics Daily Routine Analysis: Brushing your hair

Biomechanics Blog Post #1

For my action that is part of my daily routine, I chose brushing my hair. To brush your hair, first pick up your brush. Then, you run the brush from the top of your head to the bottom of your hair length. Finally, you place the brush back down. With this in mind, we can deduce that the elbow, wrist, shoulder, and finger joints are all key players in the production of this movement.

I chose to analyze the shoulder joint's movement of abduction:
Joint: Shoulder
Action Produced: Raising arm up towards head
Plane of Motion: Frontal Plane
Axes of Rotation: Sagital Axis
Osteokinematic Movement: Abduction; Open-Chain
Arthrokinematic Movement: Convex humeral head glides inferiorly in the concave glenoid fossa
Concentric/Eccentric/Isometric: Concentric
Prime Mover(s): Deltoid and Supraspinatus
